My first race was a Brands Hatch 28th October
1984. It was the final National Championship round and I finished 13th and
lapped. I was elated.
In 85 I clinched the Novice Championship from a
part season of racing. My year was dominated by joining the London fire
Brigade and undertaking basic training.
In 86 I learned to win, taking a few Southern
Championship victories, mainly at Lydden. That winter I built my first new
car. It was all my own work, and it took me to runner up in the National Mini
Se7en Championship in 87 and 88. They were fantastic times. Poles, victories
and lap records. I hadn't noticed it but I'd become one of the main men!
89 was relatively poor - 4th in the
championship - but it fired me up to redouble the effort for 1990. Finally I
clinched the National title, and the last run under 850cc regs. So 91 was
another all new challenge with 1000cc engines. I retained my title with a race
to spare, and finished the year in the Miglia winter series, picking up CCC
sponsorship in the process.
Miglia has been a wonderful adventure, winning
the title in '97 and 2006, and it's
become a way of life. I won my first National Miglia race, with a pole and
fastest lap to go with it. That was '92 and I took the runner up spot at the
end of the season. I have repeated that feat on several occasions... 92, 93,
95 and 2002. I've finished 3rd in the championship in 94, 96 and 2003.
The CCC and Mini World association has grown and
grown. I have raced through out Europe in Historic Mini races, and been as far
as Japan and Jamaica... all because I can drive a Mini quickly.
Another highlight was a couple of seasons
as the works driver for KAD as they proved their products and established
their reputation in British motorsport and manufacturing. We capped it off
winning the 'Fastest Mini in the World' race at Mini 35 in 1994.
Finally, I've got in a few other cars too. I
had a year in the MGF Cup in 1998 and I've been pedalling Andrew Howard's new
3.2 litre 375 bhp new MINI in Britcar since it was finished at the end of last
year.
